Ideally include dam, sire and foal

When we carry out a DNA test, we compare the genetic markers on the profile of the father to that of the offspring. The dam’s sample can help us provide more accurate results because by having access to her DNA, laboratory scientists can easily eliminate the genetic markers the foal has inherited from its mother, leaving only the paternally inherited DNA markers for comparison. If you are unable to include the mother’s sample, we will need to extract additional DNA markers from the samples of the alleged sire and offspring.

About the horse parentage test

The equine parentage test we offer is a 23 genetic marker test. The comparison between the profiles of the parent and its offspring actually just uses 22 of the 23 genetic markers. The 23rd genetic marker is simply used to establish the sex of the horses tested and acts as a quality control measure to ensure the client has labelled the samples correctly and that there have been no mix-ups in labelling (such as marking the dam’s samples as belonging to the sire).

Results for equine parentage testing

  • Parentage qualifies (Inclusion of sire and dam) – both the sire and dam matched the progeny (foal) at all 22 DNA markers.
  • Parentage does not qualify (Exclusion of sire, dam is included) – the dam matched the progeny (foal), but the possible sire did not match the progeny and is not the sire.
