The avuncular DNA test is done to determine whether there is a relationship between a child and his or her alleged aunts or uncles. The relationship is based on both genetic evidence and the statistical probability calculated by our scientists that will establish the likelihood of the people tested being in fact related.
An avuncular test is usually done when the alleged father is deceased or not able to do the test. In this case, testing the supposed relatives of the father can tell you whether the child is in fact related to them and thus, whether the child’s father is his or her true biological father. If there is no relationship between the tested relative and the niece/nephew then the indication is that the alleged father is not the child’s paternal dad.
The genetic profiles will be used to determine the probability of relatedness and from this information they can go on to calculate the avuncular index.
An avuncular test will provide a different rate of inclusion than a paternity DNA test. This is because the amount of common genetic material between uncles and aunts and their nephews and nieces is smaller than that shared between father and child.
